Somerset Shelter
Funds needed = R 60 000

The Somerset West Night Shelter was established in 1988. Their mission is to give hope and dignity to the homeless. Three weeks ago they were given the use of a site one block down on the same street. This is now an emergency shelter for families. Overnight they tripled their services, now accommodating 120 people on two sites. For the first time, they have children in their care. They have become the first organization in the Western Cape to offer shelter for families, with this kind of shelter being a longstanding need before Covid-19, the vision is to continue beyond March 2021. The need is to find a way to best facilitate the necessary distancing of individual family units. Due to the lack of dining space, additional structures for families to eat separately and respectfully socially are needed. They have come up with a creatively clever way to build small structures that will cater comfortably for each family, spaced apart in a crescent shape to add privacy and security to the space that is currently not adequate.

In order to achieve their vision, they rely on the generosity of individuals, churches, and organizations. Their hope is that the community will help carry the burden by supporting them financially and helping them achieve their goal with the clear current urgency. Not only are we all waiting on the full impact of the virus, but winter is also coming. Right now only half our families can share their meal inside the building, the others have to negotiate a shaded, shielded, dry spot.

The manufacturer is willing to work at cost and available to prioritize the project.

How brilliant will it be to have every family tucked away in their own cabin, ready to connect and enjoy a hot meal together?!
